Wow! That's all I can think of to say. I'm blown away by the realism.

first I blocked out the skin, than i did shading first with colors - basic soft brush - and than with dodge/burn technique / not literally dodge/burn, but using mask and adjustment layer of course /. When I was satisfied with the skin tones I started adding little dots to achieve optimal skin texture and I used 63 basic brush to add some more light and shadows, specially around the wrinkles and after many many hours ta dah!

Having a good reference is essential if you want to make photorealistic painting, you need to study the skin of the object and learn about the skin structure, pores etc.

So basically I used 3 brushes for skin - basic soft brush hardness 0 for basic shading and blending, basic 63 brush for more textured skin and basic soft brush / hardness 50 with scattering for pores and finishing touches.

Wow, thank you so much for the explanation! I'll have to try out some of these techniques then... although I doubt I'll achieve that gorgeous soft glow you've got going here (: Masks still confuse me so much!! xD That pores tip in particular looks interesting C: Thanks, lovely!

it is simple, when in photoshop, you choose layer you want to lighten/darken - let's call the layer SKIN, and than you choose from adjustments window above the layers window the curves. This creates adjustment layer above your SKIN layer. You have to clip this adjustment layer to SKIN layer. Make sure that the mask is white, than move the curve up or down, depending on if you want to lighten or darken. Than just invert the white mask to black and with white brush paint on the mask over the places you want to have darker, and the mask reveals the adjustment you made. Very simple, just try! :)
